You will always need auto insurance, and you should know what you're paying for. Here are lists of what you can reasonably expect your policy to cover and what you shouldn't:
What your plan should cover:
- A collision not caused by recklessness
- A friend's accident in your car
An overgrown bush was blocking your view of the road as you pulled out of the parking lot, and another car hits yours. This kind of accident usually falls under the umbrella of your liability coverage and is therefore covered by your policy. If you're responsible for the collision, the liability portion of your policy usually pays for the other party's property damage and medical bills.
You're a good friend, so let your buddy use your car while his is in the shop—but what happens when he gets into an accident? Hopefully, you have “permissive use” coverage as part of your policy. This will protect you even if someone else was driving your car at the time of an accident. However, this type of coverage doesn't come standard at every company, so it's wise to make sure you have it before you let your friend drive.
Your policy most likely won't cover:
- A car being used for business
- A stolen vehicle
If you were on your way to make a sales call and had an accident, you may be out of luck if you don't have a commercial vehicle policy. Therefore, if you're using your car for both business and pleasure, it's wise to make sure you have the proper policy and full coverage in case you need it.
If your cousin takes your car out for a joy ride without your permission and is involved in a collision, the insurance company will still hold you responsible and require you to pay. However, if you can prove a stranger or an acquaintance stole your car, then you might be able to receive some compensation from your insurance company.
Keep in mind that policies vary greatly, and it never hurts to consult your auto insurance agent about what your policy covers.
